Fun Jacksonville Activities

Your main priorities as a law student are, of course, to read and study the law.  However, you also need to find some time each month to take a break and do something fun.  If you are new to the Jacksonville area, there are lots of fun activities that you can include in your schedule.

Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens

For animal lovers, the Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens is a must!  The zoo was established almost 100 years ago and the highlights of the zoo include more 2,000 rare animals and 1,000 varieties of plants.  The zoo has won several national awards and offers many interactive and educational experiences.  Additionally, there are several new baby animals that have been born this summer, including two new Amur leopard cubs, a giraffe, and a lion.  You can make it through the entire zoo in a short amount of time and the zoo is a great way to get out of the library for a few hours.  Please check out the zoo website for hours: http://www.jacksonvillezoo.org/

First Wednesday Art Walk

Art lovers will definitely want to add the First Wednesday Art Walk to their calendars each month.  The event is a free, self-guided tour covering a 15-block radius in Downtown Jacksonville and is one of the most popular events in Jacksonville.  Many downtown art galleries, museums, restaurants, bars, and businesses as well as dozens of local artists participate in the event.  You will have the opportunity to check out the downtown area, view many different types of art, and maybe pick up a future masterpiece.  The event is held on the first Wednesday of each month from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. rain or shine.  For more information, please check out the website:  http://www.downtownjacksonville.org/Downtown_Vision_Inc_Home.aspx

Riverside Arts Market

If you need a quick study break on the weekend, the Riverside Arts Market is a fun place to pick up local produce, desserts, and handmade art.  Located under the Fuller Warren Bridge downtown, this is a weekly event featuring the work of up to 160 artists as well as musical performances and a farmer’s market.  The market is open every Saturday in March to December from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.  Admission and parking for the event are free.  Come and check out some local Jacksonville flavor!  Website:  http://riversideartsmarket.com/

Managing Personal Relationships During Law School

Personal relationships can be strained during law school.  Students need to spend much more time studying then they did during their undergraduate experience – law school is more competitive, requires a lot more work, and demands more analytical thinking.  This may cause your family, friends, and/or significant others to feel neglected as they are not experiencing what you are currently undergoing as a law student.  This lack of understanding can also cause you to feel stressed and spread yourself thin.

Our biggest advice for a student going through this is to open up and share their experience with their loved ones.  Show them what you’re learning and why it’s difficult to comprehend concepts like the parol evidence rule, future interests, and homestead. Give them undivided attention time where you focus solely on your relationship; then study somewhere else. It is not fair if you get frustrated because they become distractions.

Sometimes it helps your family member to receive information about your work load and study requirements from an outside party.  Your Academic Success Counselor can send a letter to your loved ones to help them understand the responsibilities of law school.  This will allow you to all be on the same page and enable you to be successful and have the necessary support from your loved ones. Please talk to your counselor if you would like more information about this letter.

Our Academic Success Counselors can help you with your specific circumstances, so please do not hesitate to come by our office.

Frequently Asked Questions: Appointments and Check-In

How do I schedule an appointment?

Academic Success has an appointment scheduler online. From the FCSL main page, go to Academics → click “Academic Success” in the column on the left → scroll down the Academic Success page → and click the blue hyperlink “Please schedule appointments.”

How do I choose a counselor?

Please schedule appointments with the Academic Success Counselor who teaches your course if the meeting concerns course work. If the meeting does not concern course work, or you do not have a current course with an Academic Success Counselor, then you may schedule an appointment with your preferred counselor. If you have no preference, you will be assigned to a counselor based on counselor availability and your need.

Why do I have to check-in?

Check-in is simply a way to alert the counselor that the person with the next appointment has arrived. Although an Academic Success Counselor’s titled role is to assist students with academic matters, the Academic Success department is aware that the issues that affect academics sometimes surpass books and often involve other life matters. The Academic Success team appreciates your patience as we try to ensure the confidentiality of all of our students, including you.

Online Meeting Requests

Did you know that you can schedule an appointment with your preferred Academic Success Counselor without setting foot on campus?  The Academic Success Department has created an online form for you to use to schedule an appointment with one of our counselors.  Below is a direct link to the form:

Schedule Request Here

This form allows you to designate the type of meeting you’d like to have, select the counselor you’d like to meet with, identify your own availability, and add any necessary comments.  Once the form has been processed, you will receive a meeting invitation from our department.  Please accept that appointment and arrive at your scheduled time.

Important Note About Scheduling Appointments with Your Outlook Calendar

Many of you have commented that there are time discrepancies between scheduled meeting times and the times that you see when you receive your invite from us.

This is most likely due to to your Outlook time zone settings. You can correct this issue yourself by going into Outlook, pulling down the File Tab, clicking Options at the bottom, clicking Calendar on the left side, and then changing your time zone to US and Canada.

Alternatively, you can take your computer to the Help Desk on the second floor of the library and they can change the settings for you.
