Services Available

Some of you may remember a famous quote from the movie, Jerry Maguire:

Help me, help you!

This has a very familiar ring to it as much of what we do in Academic Success is help students acquire skills so that they can be successful on their own.  Essentially, we are here to help you learn to help yourself.  Our department is here as a resource for all students, but it’s not uncommon for students to be unaware of everything that we can do to help.  Therefore, here is a quick overview of the services we offer to our students.

About Us and the Program

All of the Academic Success Counselors are licensed attorneys in good standing with various state bars.  They have had training in student instruction, bar exam preparation, and general academic success techniques.  Counselors are available by appointment or for walk-in meetings based on availability.  The mission of our department is to assist students in maximizing academic potential during the unique rigors of law school.  We have all been there before and we understand what you are going through.  Don’t be afraid to use us as a resource!

Individual Appointments

Counselors are available for individual meetings to offer advice and assistance in many topics including the following:

  • Adjusting to the stresses and challenges of law school
  • Discussing life issues that may affect academic performance
  • Essay writing
  • Exam preparation and strategies
  • Improving study methods
  • Scheduling classes
  • Bar application completion

Writing Assistance

As permitted by LP and substantive professors, counselors are available to discuss legal writing issues, review essays and writing samples, and assist in the improvement of grammar and writing style.  The department offers a lineup of writing workshops throughout the semester.

Resources for First-Year Students

Law School Foundations I and II are skills-development seminars that provide first-year students with an intense introduction to law school and the tools necessary to become active and successful learners.  Through in-class exercises, individual meetings, and live workshops, students develop and sharpen their study and test-taking stragegies while mastering the skills necessary to succeed in law school, on the bar exam, and in practice.

Resources for Upper Level Students

There is an online series of academic success workshops on essay-writing that assist upper level students as they continue to develop and improve their writing skills.  These workshops can be found under “Vodcasts” on the Academic Success SharePoint Site.

Advanced Florida Bar Studies is a 3-credit essay-writing course taught in students’ final semester.  This skills-development course is designed to prepare students for the state-specific sections of the Florida bar exam.

Multistate Bar Exam Strategies is a 1-credit course taught during students’ final year.  This skills-development course is designed to prepare students for the multiple choice, multistate section of any state’s bar exam.

Bar Preparation Services

Counselors are available to assist with bar application questions during your law school career.  In addition, you will be assigned a bar coach upon graduation.  Your coach will assist you with preparation for your state bar exam, including essay review.

Hopefully this post has given you an overview of the variety of services offered by our department.  If you have any questions, or would like to schedule an appointment, please stop by our offices in Suite 580.

Online Meeting Requests

Did you know that you can schedule an appointment with your preferred Academic Success Counselor without setting foot on campus?  The Academic Success Department has created an online form for you to use to schedule an appointment with one of our counselors.  Below is a direct link to the form:

Schedule Request Here

This form allows you to designate the type of meeting you’d like to have, select the counselor you’d like to meet with, identify your own availability, and add any necessary comments.  Once the form has been processed, you will receive a meeting invitation from our department.  Please accept that appointment and arrive at your scheduled time.

Important Note About Scheduling Appointments with Your Outlook Calendar

Many of you have commented that there are time discrepancies between scheduled meeting times and the times that you see when you receive your invite from us.

This is most likely due to to your Outlook time zone settings. You can correct this issue yourself by going into Outlook, pulling down the File Tab, clicking Options at the bottom, clicking Calendar on the left side, and then changing your time zone to US and Canada.

Alternatively, you can take your computer to the Help Desk on the second floor of the library and they can change the settings for you.
