Networking Club Meeting on Thursday!

The second Networking Club meeting will take place on Thursday, November 1 at 5:15 p.m. in Room 555.  This meeting will focus on “Choosing Your Target Market and Preparing Your Elevator Speech.”  All students are welcome to attend Networking Club meetings!  You will receive invaluable guidance from Career Service Counselors, as well as other students, as you work together to prepare a network of contacts in your target market.  These efforts will culminate with a networking trip to each city – Atlanta, Orlando, and Washington D.C. – to attend an event sponsored by the Career Services Department with the local bar association.  Students who participated in the Networking Club last year gained confidence in their networking abilities and learned how to translate those skills into legal experience and job opportunities.

If you are unable to attend the Networking Club meeting and would like to schedule an individual counseling session to discuss your target market, schedule an appointment with one of our counselors on Symplicity.

Leveraging your Social Network

Do you have questions about how to incorporate social networking into your job search?  Have you received conflicting advice about whether to create a LinkedIn account and whether to delete your Facebook profile?  Then mark your calendar for Tuesday, October 16th at Noon in room 455 to listen to Amanda Ellis, author of The 6Ps of the BIG 3™ for Job-Seeking JDs (2010), answer all of your questions about incorporating social networking into your job search!

The 6Ps of the BIG 3™ for Job-Seeking JDs teaches lawyers and law students how to get hired through relationships they develop and cultivate on the three most popular social networking sites–Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter (collectively, the “Big 3”). Many job seekers maintain a presence on the Big 3 sites. But, a mere presence is not sufficient to get hired—it’s only one element.  The 6Ps of the BIG 3™ for Job-Seeking JDs teaches law students and lawyers how to incorporate the 6Ps (Professionalism, Profile, Privacy, Performance, Practice, Protocol) and outlines over 60 ways to use the Big 3 sites to get hired.

Amanda Ellis is the Vice President of Search for Special Counsel.  Prior to her current role, Ms. Ellis worked as an Attorney Search Director at Special Counsel and her own search firm where she placed attorneys in law firms and corporate legal departments.  Amanda Ellis Legal Search also publishes Something Different, a monthly e-newsletter that outlines a new or different service or resource available to legal professionals in each issue.  Prior to entering the legal recruiting field, Amanda practiced commercial bankruptcy law in Massachusetts and Texas. Amanda is a graduate of The University of Texas School of Law and Centenary College of Louisiana.

RSVP for this presentation on Symplicity.  Lunch will be served to those RSVP!

Over 80% of law students obtain their first post-graduate position through networking contacts.

The Career Services Department recognizes how critical networking is to your success, and to foster your networking abilities.  We are launching a networking initiative targeting three key markets – Orlando, Florida,  Atlanta, Georgia, and Washington, D.C.  The program consists of monthly meetings in which we will present a specific aspect of networking.  Members will first meet in one large group to learn a new networking skill.  We will then divide the meeting into our three targeted locations in order to investigate and apply the skills you have learned to a real market.  You will receive invaluable guidance from career service counselors, as wells as other students, as you work together to prepare a network of contacts in your target market.  These efforts will culminate with a networking trip to each city to attend an event sponsored by the Career Services Department with the local bar association.  Students who participated in the Networking Clubs last year gained confidence in their networking abilities and learned how to translate those skills into legal experience and job opportunities.

“Network Your Face Off” Webinar this Friday!

Florida Coastal Career Services has teamed up with networking expert Tiffany Gorton to bring you her presentation “Network your Face Off” on Friday September 28, 2012 from 10:00-11:00 am (EST).

Tiffany graduated from Thomas M. Cooley Law School in 2008 and moved to Seattle, Washington where she knew (literally) no-one.  Using the techniques she will discuss in her presentation combined with hard work and a positive attitude, Tiffany was able to land her dream job.   Tiffany’s passion for networking has led her to publish the following articles on the subject: “Look the Recession in the Eye and Find a Job” and “Volunteering: Reaping the benefits of Your Work.”

Tiffany’s presentation is designed to give recent law school graduates the tips, tools and skills they need for a successful career search.

Equal Justice Works Career Fair

The Equal Justice Works Career Fair in Arlington, VA, is the preeminent career fair for public interest minded law students and recent graduates.  Over 125 employers (legal aid offices, public defenders offices, federal government organizations, advocacy groups, and nonprofits) will attend this year’s conference, and will interview students for internship and permanent positions.  As you have likely heard, most legal aid and nonprofit organizations are facing funding cuts and staff layoffs, so it is especially important that students have this opportunity to interview with those few organizations that are actually hiring in this economy.

The Career Fair will take place on Friday, October 26 and Saturday, October 27 at the Crystal Gateway Marriott in Arlington, VA. Students (2L’s and 3L’s) have until September 20th to register for the conference and submit their resumes to employers for interview selection.  (Students who would like to attend the conference to gain more information but do not wish to interview, may register until October 11th).  Students can follow this link to register (http://www.equaljusticeworks.org/law-school/conference-and-careerfair/students).   Here is a link to this year’s registered employers (http://www.equaljusticeworks.org/law-school/conference-and-careerfair/employer/2012).

If you have any questions about the conference, feel free to contact Jennifer Turney at jturney@fcsl.edu in the Career Services Department.

Networking Club Events Finalized!

The CSD recognizes how critical networking is to your job search success.  As a result, we launched a networking initiative targeting  key markets in Orlando, Miami, Atlanta, and Washington, D.C.  The program is organized into four separate Networking Clubs for each target area.  Each club has met throughout the semester to cultivate students’ networking skills in the context of a specific geographic market.  These efforts will culminate with a trip to each city in May to attend a reception sponsored by Florida Coastal with the local bar association.  Although participation in a Networking Club enhances the experience, you do not have to be a member of a Club to attend the networking event.  All students and alumni are invited to participate.

Below are the details for each reception.  You will be responsible for your own travel arrangements, although students are encouraged to work together to share travel costs when appropriate.  If you are truly committed to finding a job in any of these markets, the trip is worth the investment.

During difficult economic times, most people find jobs through a contact or someone they met at an event.  As such, this trip could be the most important thing you do in your job search.  If you have not already accepted an invitation to a reception, you can add your name to our list of attendees by emailing careerservices@fcsl.edu.  Below are the dates for each reception:
