Career Services Has a New Name!

changeThe Career Services Department will now be known as the Center for Professional Development or CPD.  This is in line with the other consortium schools and better reflects the comprehensive nature of the work handled by our department at Coastal. The CPD prepares students for the world of legal work throughout the student’s academic career and beyond.

Alumni Chapter Holiday Socials

The South Carolina, Washington, D.C. and Atlanta alumni chapters have finalized their 2013Holiday bells-14 holiday events and invite you to attend!  All students, alumni and their guests are welcome.  Please RSVP via the attached links if you plan to be there.  These are great networking opportunities!

Army/Navy JAG Corps Joint Presentation!

We are excited to announce that on Friday, September 13th at 1:30 p.m. in Room 425 an Army Man in U.s. Marine Corps Uniform Saluting American FlagJAG Corps officer as well as a Navy JAG Corps officer will conduct a joint information session for all students interested in learning about careers and internship opportunities in JAG.

This is a very rare chance to listen to two military JAG Corps representatives speak to students together and an especially great opportunity for first semester 1Ls to learn all about jobs and life in the JAG Corps and speak one-on-one with officers working in the field. You will also have an opportunity to ask questions in an informal setting.

We’re Consolidating the CSD Blogs!

your careerWe will now be hosting ONE blog for all of your CSD needs!  We are consolidating each of our separate blogs into Career Crossroads.  Now, everything you need to know about Diversity, Private Practice, Alternative Careers, Government & Public Interest and anything else related to your career will be hosted on this blog.  Simply use the appropriate tag at the bottom of each post to select your interest.  For example, when you’re searching for a job in alternative careers, scroll to the right-hand side of the blog under the Categories header, click on “Job Opportunity” and then click “Alternative Careers” under the Tags header.  Your preferences will sort based on your selections.

Networking Event: Tee Off Downtown

Looking for a place to network?  Be sure to attend the first Tee Off DowntownTee Off Downtown (http://www.teeoffdowntown.com/) this Friday, May 3rd.  It will be a fun night with live music, great food and various golf activities at the Jacksonville Shipyards to kick off The PLAYERS week. The event will run from 4:00 PM – 10:30 PM.  There will be on-site parking, a food truck fare and a full cash bar.  Etiquette expert, Diann Catlin, will be making an appearance and is always willing to help anyone looking for networking advice.  Tickets can be purchased via the website mentioned above!

1:30 – 2:20pm Title: Trust Account-Ability!

Presentation to cover: Specific accounting records attorneys need to maintain • How to open a IOTA Trust Account and determine if the financial institution is qualified • How to maintain physical property (other than cash) to be held in trust for the client • How to handle client dispute regarding the funds/property held in trust • The perils of delegation (the attorney can delegate duties but not responsibility) • Examples of inadequate trust accounting and reporting (and the potential consequences) • What the attorney needs to do to maintain accurate records and suggested internal controls • How the bank can add value in information reporting in terms of how statements are received (paper, email or file upload) and backup reporting in the event of an audit • How a bank can assist in protecting Trust accounts against unauthorized transactions and monitoring

A discussion on how to reduce your risk of a malpractice lawsuit. Lawyers risk being sued every time they provide legal services. Even if you have not made a mistake, a client may file a lawsuit alleging malpractice. Although you cannot control whether a lawsuit is filed against you, you can minimize your risk.

Atlanta Alumni Chapter Holiday Social
