Another layer of diversity is the ability to speak other languages. The United States is comprised of millions of people that represent varying cultures, ethnicities, and native tongues. The ability to speak and write fluently in a language other than English is a remarkable skill to have. The ability to speak other languages increases the clientele that one can serve and makes an individual an asset to his or her employer, especially if he or she is the only one in the office that can speak another language.

Florida Coastal knows the importance of training and utilizing multilingual students to aid in the legal process. Recently, Florida Coastal hosted a training session for legal interpreters and translators. See more at Multilingual students attend training to serve pro bono clients – The Financial News & Daily Record – Jacksonville, Florida.

Ever heard of a job opportunity where the first 500 applicants are guaranteed an interview??

Neither had I until I read about the summer 2012 Judicial Intern Opportunity Program sponsored by the American Bar Association Section of Litigation. This program is a full-time, six-week minimum, summer internship program open to all first- or second-year minority and/or economically disadvantaged law students. It is a wonderful program, and it is customary for several Florida Coastal students to be selected for one of these internships each year.

The ABA begins accepting applications for second-year students on November 1, and December 1 for first-year students. The deadline for applying is January 6, 2012, but the program has “rolling” admission so applying early will definitely help you. And remember, the first 500 applicants will be guaranteed at least one interview! This is pretty amazing!

Selected students are given an opportunity to intern for six weeks or more during the summer with a participating state or federal judge in participating cities. Participating judges are from Illinois; Texas; Miami, FL; Phoenix, AZ; Washington, DC; Philadelphia, PA: Seattle, WA; Los Angeles and San Francisco, CA. Students selected to the program will receive an award of $1,500. The award is intended to be reimbursement of some of the expenses associated with the placement.

Internship opportunities were offered to 191 minority and/or economically disadvantaged law students last year. Please see this year’s flyer, program description, and frequently asked questions page. Students wanting to apply to this year’s program can begin the process by accessing the program application, eligibility requirements, specific information on locations and all of the above information on the program website: www.ambar.org/jiop.
