Tax Law and Public Interest Work?

You have probably heard that demonstrating a commitment to serving the community and gaining real-world experience are necessary to make you competitive in your public interest job search.  But what about taking a tax law class?

The ABA Division for Public Services recently hosted a roundtable session titled “Public Interest Careers for Lawyers,” in which co-executive director of Southeast Louisiana Legal Services, Mark Moreau, stated that:

Those interested in public interest law should have a strong tax law background. At a time where over half of legal services clients are working poor, a strong understanding in tax or welfare law is important.  He also noted that inadequate understanding of welfare and tax law is a major deficiency among legal aid providers.
