What to do this Weekend – Experience the World while Staying Local

One of the nice things about living in a area like Jacksonville is that you often have the opportunity to experience a wide range of cultures and activities without traveling far. This weekend is no exception, and I’m going to highlight some of the opportunities with a brief World Culture Tour of Jacksonville.

Indian
Check out DHOL-N-BEATZ, Jacksonville’s first ever Bollywood Club Party!
On Saturday, September 8th, at the Aqua Nightclub (11000 Beach Blvd.), DJ Veekay from SF will be on the turntables spinning the best in Bollywood music. Doors open at 9:00 PM and there’s a $12 cover charge. Check out a sample from DJ Veekay here and visit the Facebook event page for additional information.
Bonus Event: Ek Tha Tiger (Trailer), now showing at the AMC Regency 24.

Italian
For centuries, the enduring beauty, majestic history, and rich cultural fabric of Italy have served as inspirations to artists of the world. This weekend, take advantage of the opportunity to see contemporary responses to those inspirations, and visit the ongoing exhibit Rendering Italy: UNF Art & Design Faculty Abroad. The exhibit at the Museum of Contemporary Art features works by eight UNF faculty members from the Department of Art and Design, and is open from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM today (9/7) and tomorrow (9/8) and from Noon to 4:00 PM on Sunday (9/9). Weekend admission for Coastal students is only $5, and if you can’t make it this weekend, the exhibit is open until October 7, 2012.

Mexican
You are running out of time to see Miradas: Ancient Roots in Modern and Contemporary Mexican Art: Works from the Bank of America Collection at the Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens. Running through next weekend, this exhibit takes a close look at paintings, prints and photographs created over the past eighty years, examining and celebrating work by artists on both sides of the border to reveal a variety of cultural aspects as they emerged in the years after the Mexican Revolution (1910–1920) to the present day.

Native American
Visit the Jacksonville Public Library (Main Branch) to see Art Walk: Between Two Worlds. A visual representation of the history of Native Americans in the Southwest United States through the art of Lynn Wehrmann, the exhibit is open during library hours – Friday & Saturday 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM & Sunday 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM.
Bonus Event: Before and After 1565: A Participatory Examination of St. Augustine’s Native American History at Flagler’s Crisp-Ellert Art Museum.

Spanish
Celebrate the Pedro Menendez 1565 Founders’ Weekend at the Fountain of Youth in St. Augustine. Enjoy this historic 16th Century Encampment and Faire featuring 1565 reenactments, demonstrations, and participation.

Enjoy!

Card Catalog Magic

As you may recall, just this past fall, the LTC launched its new catalog Encore,
Such a fine new tool, you’d be a great fool, if you did not use it to help you find more.
In days long gone by, before the web in the sky, finding information could be quite hard,
You’d search for long days, in so many ways, to find that magical catalog card.

Don’t say there’s nothing to do this weekend; check out these events!

As always, there are a lot of happenings going on around Jacksonville this weekend. How about heading out to the beach for the 22nd Annual George’s Music Springing the Blues Festival at Jax Beach. Make sure you check the schedule, so you don’t miss your favorite artist. Musicians will be playing all weekend, starting Friday night and ending Sunday evening. There is also a Running the Blues 5k on Saturday at 9:30am; race day registration is allowed. If visual art is more to your liking, then try the MOCA Jacksonville’s ArtFusion Sundays To Dye For event.  Finally, enjoy arts and crafts and plenty of exhibits and music in Orange Park at the third annual Art & About: Neighborhood Art and Music Event on Saturday.

Spring has sprung!

It’s Easter weekend.  If you like egg hunts, what could be more Florida than an underwater egg hunt?  I didn’t even know they had those, but there are a couple (plus some other, more traditional activities).

Eggs and bunnies not your thing?  Try the Mandarin Arts Festival!

No?  Okay, then stick to the basics – go to the beach or stay in the Library and study.  (I would pick the Library!)
