TARGET YOUR AUDIENCE

Sometimes, students focus on networking as if it were something to be checked off a list and they forget the substance of what they should be gaining from the experience. The number of people you speak with at an event is irrelevant.  Rather, the focus should be on the substance of your conversation and whether you were able to establish a meaningful connection with anyone.  To get the most out of a relationship, identify attorneys and firms who practice in your chosen field or in your same geographic area.  Brainstorm with your career counselor to identify any other targets, then focus on building relationships with them.   Avoiding the shotgun approach to networking will yield better results.
