The Senior Supervising Attorney co-leads the Southern Poverty Law Center’s Children’s Rights work throughout the region. This includes children’s rights-related litigation integrated with other forms of advocacy to dismantle the school-to-prison, school-to-institutionalization and school-to-deportation pipelines; to protect and strengthen public education, a cornerstone of our democracy, as an equitably-resourced common good to which all school-aged children have free and meaningful access so that students and communities can thrive, especially Black students, students of color, students with disabilities, English learners, immigrant children, LGBTQ+ students, students experiencing homelessness, and students living in poverty; to ensure access to effective, community-based mental health services for children; to reduce the overreliance on institutionalized care, involuntary psychiatric care and other involuntary commitments that segregate children without providing the services they need; to reduce the number of detained and incarcerated children; and to ensure that children living in poverty and low-income households have access to equitable resources to thrive.
The Senior Supervising Attorney will be responsible for working with the Deputy Legal Director to develop the vision and strategy, and for executing the plan, to deliver systemic reform. They will supervise a dedicated team of staff attorneys and help manage the work of support staff. To this end, the Senior Supervising Attorney will lead individual and class action cases in state and federal courts at the trial and appellate levels and will engage in other forms of related public advocacy on the topics above. The attorney’s docket will include impact cases under federal civil rights statutes (such as Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the Equal Educational Opportunities Act of 1974, the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, and the Individuals with Disabilities Act of 1990), consumer protection and fraud statutes (such as state and federal false claims statutes), health care laws (such as the Medicaid Act), and/or state and federal constitutions. The focus of the position may change as warranted by changes in the law, the circumstances in the states we serve, or the needs of the organization. As SPLC is currently reorganizing its work into four strategic impact areas, there is a possibility that this work will ultimately be performed in a structure other than practice groups.

Primary Job Functions:
• Develop new cases and campaigns and lead litigation and public advocacy under the supervision of the Deputy Legal Director;
• Supervise and manage the legal work of Senior Staff Attorneys, Staff Attorneys, Law Fellows, and other legal staff;
• Collaborate with the Deputy Legal Director and the Policy Department to identify and support the advancement of state and local policy priorities and testify to legislative bodies upon request;
• Collaborate with the Deputy Legal Director and the Communications Department to develop communication strategies around cases and campaigns; serve as spokesperson upon request;
• Collaborate with team members of other practice groups to advance the impact goals and campaigns of the Center;
• Supervise outreach activities related to cases and campaigns;
• Communicate regularly with SPLC staff across the southern region about cases, campaigns, and strategies;
• Manage a team of approximately a dozen staff, providing mentoring and coaching to support the work;
• Hire, train, establish and monitor staff performance and development goals, assign duties, and conduct performance reviews;
• Represent SPLC in various fora, including before community groups, legislatures, state agencies, and the media; and
• Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications –
Education and Related Work Experience:
• Juris Doctorate Degree;
• At least 8 years of federal court litigation or comparable legal experience;
• At least 2 years managing legal staff;
• Excellent legal research and writing skills;
• Excellent oral and written communication skills; and
• Membership in good standing with a bar and willingness to sit for the next bar exam in: Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, or Mississippi if the attorney cannot waive.

This job is performed under general office conditions, and is not subject to any strenuous physical demands or dangerous conditions.
